The Photography of Akio

Photographer Akio (London via Tokyo via Kyoto) is the most amazing ever. The lighting brings out the anticipation of movement, when the only action in these narratives comes from the light particles, and everything else remains suspended.

The tranquil images seem a lot more elaborate than they actually are. Random objects clutter together and project some synergistic appeal: there's Winnie the Pooh, cocaine, the magic wand, the cyborg bunny and the old TV. Then there's the neon-lit gum-ball machine, the saran wrapped wheelchair, fluorescent lights, wigs, masks, dolls, scattered vintage childhood toys, plastic decorations, and the chaotic Beetle Juice-like arrangements of old furniture. Nothing seems to be particularly alive either. There is an implication of secret entrances and spooky symbolism, which I might be imagining. And there is definitely an Oxygen 8 keyboard midi controller present !!

The carousel pony wearing a dragon-goldfish mask looks quite natural nesting up on the tree branch, as it blankly admires the humanoid male mannequin being cradled by the wind. A little clown puppet is perched on another branch in the background. They look so comfortable that our logic wouldn't second guess their positioning, while our subconscious falls into their strange enchantments : )
